Achieving the best possible results post surgery requires diligent post-operative care of the scar. This guide outlines the essential steps for ensuring optimal healing and minimizing complications after your scar revision procedure.

1. Follow Your Surgeon’s Instructions

Every scar revision surgery is unique, and your surgeon’s specific instructions should be your primary guide. Be sure to:

  • Attend all follow-up appointments.

  • Take prescribed medications as directed to manage pain and prevent infection.

  • Contact your surgeon if you notice signs of complications, such as excessive swelling, redness, or discharge.

2. Keep the Area Clean and Dry with adequate Taping

Proper wound care is critical to prevent infection and promote healing:

  • Clean the area gently with a mild, surgeon-approved cleanser.

  • Pat the area dry with a clean towel—do not rub or apply pressure.

  • Avoid exposing the incision site to water (e.g., swimming or soaking in a bath) until your surgeon gives the green light.

  • Taping of the scar with Steristrips is essential to achieve best results. Taping has to be done diligently for at least three weeks from the day of surgery. It ensures adequate strength in all the scars during the healing process.

3. Protect the Scar From Sun Exposure

UV exposure can darken scars and delay healing. Protect your healing skin by:

  • Keeping the area covered with clothing or bandages or caps/headgear.

  • Applying a high-SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen once the wound has fully closed (consult your surgeon for timing).

  • Generally sun screen application(on exposed areas only) three weeks after the surgery.

4. Use Recommended Scar Treatments

Your surgeon may suggest topical treatments to improve scar healing and reduce visibility. These might include:

  • Silicone sheets or gels (viz. Contratubex or Hexilak Ultra) to hydrate the skin and promote even healing.

  • Over-the-counter or prescription creams that aid in scar reduction.

  • Massage techniques to soften the scar tissue (only start this if approved by your surgeon).

  • Scar massage is started after three weeks from the date of surgery. Massaging has to be done with gentle pressure along the length of the scar. Pressure is considered adequate if the scar turns from pink color to white and then pink again. Refer to video below.

5. Limit Physical Activity

Strenuous activities can strain the surgical site, increasing the risk of complications such as wound reopening or widened scars. Be sure to:

  • Avoid heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, or any movements that stretch the area.

  • Gradually resume normal activities as advised by your surgeon.

6. Manage Swelling and Discomfort

Mild swelling and discomfort are common after scar revision surgery. To ease these symptoms:

  • Apply cold compresses as instructed by your surgeon.

  • Keep the affected area elevated when possible to reduce swelling.

  • Take pain medications as prescribed.

7. Be Patient With the Healing Process

Healing from scar revision surgery takes time, and final results may not be visible for several months. Factors that can affect healing include:

  • The size and location of the scar.

  • Your skin type and overall health.

  • Adherence to post-operative care guidelines.

When to Contact Your Surgeon

While most patients heal without complications, it’s important to reach out to your surgeon if you experience:

  • Fever or chills, which may indicate an infection.

  • Persistent pain or swelling that doesn’t improve.

  • Bleeding, discharge, or a foul odor from the surgical site.

Final Thoughts

Proper post-operative care is the key to achieving the best results of scar after surgery. By following your surgeon’s instructions, protecting the area, and being patient with the healing process, you can minimize complications and maximize the success of your procedure.
